3 Critical Questions To Ask Before Choosing Your Health Care Provider

1. Does the health care provider follow a Standard of Care & Performance that goes beyond the minimum set by industry associations and state licensing boards?

Minimum standards of care for the physical therapy industry are set by industry associations and the state board of examiners, simply meet the minimum acceptable criteria for quality of treatment and conduct. The intention of the these standards is to prevent unacceptable practice, not to require state‐of‐the‐art excellence. Staten Island Center  is about more than maintaining minimum standards, and that’s why we have developed our own Standards Of Care & Performance ‐ to set the bar for excellence in care. An Important part of excellence providing the patient with enough information to help them with the decision about where to get care and what to expect. Many hospitals and other institutions may not offer patients a choice, but you should know that the selection of your therapy provider is up to you. Why not choose a provider that can demonstrate how they pursue continued advances in care that result in better outcomes, quicker recovery, and less chance of setbacks or recurrence?

  • Before choosing your therapist, ask to review their Standards of Care & Performance. If they fumble around trying to find one, chances are they don’t really follow one. Staten Island Center providers follow a results-driven Standards of Care & Performance that sets the bar for the continued pursuit of excellence. See our Standards of care here.

2. What expertise do your therapists possess that make them uniquely qualified to treat my condition?

Many people have the impression that all rehab clinics are alike, but that is an important misconception. Most of today’s top providers have advanced training and certifications in a specialized area of practice. Some therapists have advanced degrees such as an MPT or PhD., along with specialized training certifications in assessment and treatment techniques. When you understand more about their training, certifications, and continuing education, you will be in a better position to find the best skills for your particular problem.

  • Before choosing your therapist, ask to hear more about their degrees, special certifications and how much continuing education they take each year, and how that affects their approach to treating your unique situation.. At Hands On Rehab, therapists have advanced training in:
    • Spinal disorders,
    • Soft tissue therapy
    • Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA)
    • Certified Strength and Conditioning
    • Orthopedic Rehabilitation

3. How do you assure that I will get the best care for my unique situation?

The only acceptable answer is that they incorporate Evidence Based Practice into the day to day treatment of patients. As a prospective patient looking to get better faster, while experiencing less inconvenience, and incurring the least amount of out of pocket expense, you absolutely want a provider who incorporates evidence based practice into their patient treatment programs.

  • Before choosing your therapist, learn more about their approach to implementing the latest Evidence Based Practices. At Staten Island Center, the latest information is reviewed and incorporated into our treatment protocols as quickly as possible.
